CHAPTER THIRTY
Mirabella stayed in her seat after the buzzer, pretending to organize her notes while the classroom emptied. She really needed to talk to Mr. Klutter about the Historical Society, but it seemed like every kid in class had questions about the Global Studies chapter they were working on. Who knew that history could be so confusing? But it was. Like the way Napoleon Bonaparte ended up in prison and yet became one of the most powerful men in the world, named himself emperor, then got exiled, escaped from exile to rule in France again, and then got exiled all over again. Mirabella shook her head. The whole thing sounded like a huge, messed up psychological experiment.
The only kids who didnât seem to have any questions about it were Erin and Stacey. In fact, Stacey hardly paid attention in class at all anymore, and Mirabella wondered how she planned to pass the test at the end of the section. How could she possibly expect to know the material when Mirabella was doing all her homework?
All at once, Mirabellaâs mouth went dry and her stomach got queasy. No, no, no, no, no! She could hardly even think about it. It was bad enough to do someone elseâs homework, but cheating on a test could get her into a load of trouble. And it was totally wrong! She put her head down on her desk and closed her eyes, trying to think about something else.
She was so upset she didnât notice that Mr. Klutter had settled into the desk beside her until he cleared his throat. Mirabella jerked her head up and her pencil rolled off the desk.
When Mr. Klutter leaned over to pick it up, the desk he was sitting in wobbled and tilted, one end rising high into the air. Mr. Klutterâs shoes slipped and slid on the floor as he struggled to regain his balance.
Mirabellaâs mouth fell open. She wanted to do something, but she could only watch in fascination as the strange battle between man and desk took place. The desk wavered, and rocked before slamming back down onto the floor.
Mr. Klutter propelled himself out of the desk and stared at it like it was alive. âWhat a ride! Maybe I should join the rodeo.â He grinned.
When Mirabella didnât answer, he shrugged, picked up the pencil and handed it to her. âDo you have a question about the homework, Mirabella?â
âNo, Mr. Klutter.â She tucked the pencil into the outside pocket of her bag.
âThen, I suppose you must have some other good reason for hanging out in my classroom during lunch. Iâm sure you didnât come for the floorshow, as entertaining as it was. What can I do for you?â He gave her an encouraging look.
What if it wasnât him? Mirabella pinched the tip of one fingernail between the fingers of her other hand, twisting it back and forth. It just had to be him. âAre you the Mr. Klutter on the Robertsville Historical Society members list?â
He wrinkled his brow.
